What to text friends after you pay the bill
The hardest part of covering a group bill is not always the math. Sometimes it is asking people to pay you back without sounding annoying.
You paid the restaurant bill, delivery order, rideshare, grocery run, or group expense. Everyone said they would send money. Now you need to tell people what they owe, include tax and tip, and make sure you are not left covering the difference.
A good payment text should be simple, clear, and easy to act on.
The basic payment text
If you already know what someone owes, keep it direct:
"Your total came out to $42.80 including tax and tip. Venmo is @yourhandle whenever you get a chance."
That works because it includes the actual amount, explains what is included, and gives the person a clear way to pay.
You do not need to over-explain. Most people expect to pay their share. The goal is to make it easy for them to do it correctly.
If you used BillSplitterApp
If you used BillSplitterApp to calculate the split, send the link first:
"I put the bill into BillSplitterApp so everyone can claim what they ordered. It includes tax and tip automatically."
Or:
"Here's the split link from dinner. Claim your items and it'll show your total with tax and tip included."
Or:
"They only let us use one card, so I paid the check. I put everything here so everyone can grab their items and pay me back."
These texts work because they explain why the link exists. You are not just sending a random app link into the group chat. You are giving people a way to see their total.
If the restaurant only allowed one card
When a restaurant only allows one card, it helps to say that clearly:
"The restaurant only let us use one card, so I covered the check. Here's the split so everyone can see what they owe."
Or:
"They couldn't split the check, so I put it on mine. I added the bill here with tax and tip included."
This makes the situation feel normal. You are not asking for a favor. You are just collecting the money you covered for the table. For more on this scenario, see how to split a bill when the restaurant only allows one or two cards.
If some people ordered drinks and others did not
Alcohol can make repayment awkward, so be clear and neutral:
"I separated drinks so the non-drinkers weren't covering alcohol. Your total includes your items, tax, and tip."
Or:
"I split the food and assigned drinks to whoever ordered them. Let me know if anything looks off."
Or:
"I kept drinks separate and split shared food between the people who had it."
The tone matters. You do not need to call anyone out. Just explain how the bill was handled.
If there were shared appetizers or desserts
Shared items can also confuse people, especially if only part of the table had them.
Try:
"I split the shared apps between the people who had them and added tax/tip proportionally."
Or:
"I assigned the shared items to the people who split each one. Your total should include your part of those plus tax and tip."
Or:
"Apps and desserts are split between the people who shared them."
That gives people confidence that the number is not random.
If you are sending individual requests
For individual payment requests, make the note specific.
Instead of:
"Dinner"
Try:
"Dinner Friday — includes tax and tip"
Or:
"Dinner at Avec — your items + tax/tip"
Or:
"Group dinner split — shared apps included"
Specific notes help people remember what the request is for. They also reduce the chance that someone thinks the amount is wrong because they forgot about tax, tip, or shared items.
If someone underpaid
Try:
"Hey, I think your total was $38.40 with tax and tip. Looks like you sent $32, so just missing the extra $6.40."
Or:
"No worries, I think the tax/tip got left out. Your full share came out to $45.20."
Or:
"I think the split link showed $29.75 for yours. Can you send the difference when you get a chance?"
Keep it boring and factual. Most people are not trying to underpay. They either forgot the extras, misread the receipt, or rounded too aggressively.
If someone has not paid yet
Following up can feel uncomfortable, but it is reasonable.
Try:
"Hey, just bumping this from dinner. Your total was $41.60 whenever you get a chance."
Or:
"Quick reminder on the dinner split from Saturday. No rush, but wanted to make sure it didn't get buried."
Or:
"Hey, I'm closing the loop on the bill from last night. Your share came out to $36.25."
The best follow-up is short. Do not apologize for asking to be paid back. You covered the bill.
If the group chat is messy
Sometimes the group chat becomes a pile of screenshots, Venmo handles, "what do I owe?" messages, and people trying to remember who ordered what.
In that case, reset the thread:
"To make this easier, I put the bill into BillSplitterApp. Everyone can claim their items there and it'll show the total with tax and tip."
Or:
"Rather than doing receipt math in the chat, use this link and claim what you had."
This keeps the conversation from turning into a spreadsheet.
What not to send
Avoid vague payment texts when the bill was complicated.
"Send me for dinner" is not enough if people ordered different amounts.
"Just send whatever" is generous, but it usually means the payer eats the difference.
"Everyone send $50" may work for an even split, but it can feel unfair if some people ordered much less.
A better text includes the amount, what it covers, and where to send it.
The easiest version
The easiest payment text is the one that gives people everything they need:
"Here's the bill split. Claim your items and it'll show your total with tax and tip. Venmo/Cash App details are included."
That makes repayment easy without turning you into the group accountant.
How BillSplitterApp helps
BillSplitterApp is built to make the payment text easier.
One person enters the bill, adds tax, tip, and fees, and shares a private link. Everyone claims what they ordered, including shared items. BillSplitterApp calculates each person's total with proportional tax and tip included.
Then the payer can share Venmo and Cash App details so friends can pay back faster. If someone wants to use Zelle, Apple Cash, PayPal, or another method, they can still use the correct total and pay manually.
You get a clear split. They get a clear amount. The group chat stays normal.
